Stylish Sitting Room

With the right furnishings, just about any spare room can be turned into a sophisticated sitting room.

Here, a lavishly dressed daybed pulls out to make sleeping accommodation for overnight guests, a games table sits ready for a quiet game of cards or chess and a comfortable armchair and coordinating accessories add the all-important finishing touches. The result is a stylish room with a classic European look.

The timeless décor begins with the creative use of decorative wood moldings placed around each window, eight inches from the window frames. The moldings create a frame around the black and gold metal drapery rods.

Lush silk fabric is tied from the rods and caught half-way to the floor by a cord and tassel. Walls are painted a warm taupe color. A coordinating low-pile carpet and orange accents in the room's furniture and accessories complement the color palette.

Two matching floor lamps stand beside the metal daybed which is covered with an assortment of cushions in shades of taupe and grey. Beside the bed, a traditional chair is upholstered in a rich gold and burnt orange fabric.
