A Fresh Take on Aztec

Tile floors, wood beamed ceilings and white walls form a traditional backdrop for this modern Southwest sitting room.

A rusted metal chandelier, the huge contemporary painting and compact upholstered furniture provide the updates.

The impressive painting offers a dramatic focal point for the room. Its intense colors evoke images of desert sunsets and hand woven Indian blankets. Overhead hangs a rustic chandelier, fitted with four pillar candles. At the entrance to the room, a large tropical plant moves in the breeze from an open window.

The terra cotta floor tiles are topped by an angled Aztec area rug woven from yarns dyed in earthy oranges and reds.

On top of the rug, a burnished metal coffee table provides a convenient place for books and coffee cups. Its complex finish reflects the colors of the room as they change with the light of day.

The low, off-white couch is flanked on one side by a square wooden end table and, on the other, by a round glass table top set on a pottery base.

Both tables are adorned with ornaments made from complementary materials. A floor lamp standing behind the wooden table is metal. The lamp on the glass table is made from pottery.
